In removing carpet in my dining room I found vinyl tile. I popped one up and scraped some of the black tar- like paper off and found oak flooring. I am trying to remove the roofing tar- like stuff. I have tried scraping but WOW. I have tried adhesive remover. Turns it to paste. Any suggestions? I will be sanding the floor later but now I need to remove this junk! HELP!Need help with removing adhesive under vinyl tiles!?
well, it's too late to warn you that flooring from before 1980 sometime, could contain asbestos and so could the adhesive. i hope that you don't have young children in the house. it sounds like what you have is a hot tar installed asbestos tile floor. it was the best install job that you could get back the 40's-the 60's. and as for your dreams of re claiming an old oak hardwood floor, there will be tar or whatever kind of adhesive in the joints and cracks and seams of the flooring. you won't be able to get that out, and it will smear, smudge, and grind into the wood as you sand. and there probably was a reason that the people who lived in the house at the time covered up the old wood floor, wear or damage. at this point, i would say that your best bet would be to call in a flooring re finisher for professional advice, before you go any further. i hope that you didn't raise a lot of dust with your project, you might want to get the air and dust tested, too. good luck.Need help with removing adhesive under vinyl tiles!?
That junk , can only be removed by pure muscle labor , get a paint scraper the professional type ,large handle ,with few spare blades , start in one corner and remove as much as you can ,so when you use the sander your paper doesn't clog or smear the gunk on the floor .
Nobody was thinking about removing that stuff when they were lying floors in days of old. Use a sharp edge putty knife on your hands and knees or they make one with a pole tou can use standing. After all the scraping is done, the sanding begins. Fun- Fun- Fun. Think about putting carpet back done?
